What determines your legacy and that of your company’s? In this four-part series, we will look into a variety of factors that contribute to your overall personal and professional legacy.

Merriam-Webster defines the word “legacy” in the very narrow terms of leaving behind money or personal property, most often in the form of a will. This series will examine the broader definition of the word. Your legacy does not always have to be something tangible, like wealth, but can instead be an overarching reflection of your contributions to society and the world at large.

One of the things we at the Archangel Group seek to identify for each of our clients is their unique personal brand. Your own personal brand plays a big part in how your company’s brand will be perceived by potential consumers. What is your overall vision for your brand? What makes your company a reflection of you? How can you achieve success without compromising any of your core principles?

There are many ways to explore your personality and get in touch with how you operate in a business or management setting, as well as in your personal interactions. A company can only be as strong and effective as its leader, so it’s important to get to know yourself on a deeper level. There are many free personality tests online that provide a great way to gain  insight into why we express ourselves in certain ways. 

The Myers-Briggs personality test is based on the work of psychiatrist Carl Jung, and was developed by Isabel Briggs Myers and her mother, Katharine Briggs. According to Jung’s theory of personality types, there are four main dichotomies which yield a variation of sixteen different combinations. The test asks a series of questions in order to gain insight into your general preferences, which are characterized as:

  • Extraverted (E) vs. Introverted (I)
  • Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N)
  • Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F)

and the fourth dichotomy, introduced by Isabel Briggs Myers …

  • Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P)

These sixteen different personality types can then be used to classify each person using a 4 letter acronym, like INTJ or ENFP.

Understanding our personality type in depth is a great tool and can help us to discern which methods work best when we\’re trying to achieving our goals. It is important to remember, though, that these are basic preferences and do not fully explain ourselves at large.

Knowledge of self is an important part of personal growth. Being a good leader requires self-introspection and careful consideration of all variables in any given situation. Identifying your strengths, as well as your weaknesses, is key. Being able to adapt and change where possible and outsourcing when needed is the key to building a successful brand.

Something that often influences the success or failure of a company is whether or not it offers something different or brings a unique perspective to the table. Which is why it\’s important to reflect the values you strive to implement in your company in your everyday life. Being authentic to yourself  is the best way to stand out in an ever-growing marketplace. Leading by example shows that you not only practice what you preach, but that you also genuinely care, which will then inspire broader trust in your brand.

Once you have a full grasp of who you are as a person and how you want your company to operate, you can more effectively achieve your goals and turn your vision for your company into a reality.
